Internet movie and TV subscription platform Netflix has launched its streaming service in Cuba, starting at USD 7.99 per month. The company said Cubans with access to high-speed internet and international payment methods would be able to subscribe to the service and watch a wide range of content, including award-winning series such as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and the global adventure Marco Polo. “We are delighted to finally be able to offer Netflix to the people of Cuba, connecting them with stories they will love from all over the world,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. “Cuba has great filmmakers and a robust arts culture and one day we hope to be able to bring their work to our global audience of over 57 million members."
Netflix began offering its service in Latin America in 2011 and now counts over 5 million members in the region. The company added 4.33 million subscribers in the fourth quarter to increase its overall customer base to 57.4 million in the 50 countries in which it operates. It will also expand to Australia and New Zealand by March and recently announced that it expects to grow profitably to around 200 markets worldwide by 2017, including China.
