Netflix lifts prices in the Netherlands, with immediate effect

Netflix is increasing the price for its subscription in the Netherlands, with immediate effect. The standard subscription, with two streams in HD quality, will cost EUR 13.99 from 10.99 per month while the premium subscription, with four streams in 4K, will go to EUR 15.99 from 13.99. The basic subscription price will remain the same, at EUR 7.99 per month.

It is the first time in four years that Netflix has increased its rates in the Netherlands, after lifting prices across Europe in 2017. The company has since raised its rates for Belgium in January 2020 and for France this past summer. New customers in the Netherlands will be charged the new prices while existing Netflix subscribers will pay them from their next bill.

Netflix said it is charging more so that it can invest in content. The company invests heavily into the creation of new content and to buy the rights to third-party content. Companies such as Disney and Amazon (since the acquisition of MGM) have a large library of their own and so need to put comparatively less into buying rights for additional content.
