Netflix starts offering Mobile and Mobile+ subscriptions in South Africa

Netflix has launched two new subscription plans in South Africa that are aimed specifically at mobile devices, Mybroadband reported. The Mobile plan costs ZAR 39 per month and Mobile+ costs ZAR 59. Netflix seems to be rolling out these packages locally, and visitors to Netflix's sign-up page may be presented with either option.

The Netflix Mobile plan offers one single stream and supports smartphones and tablets, and allows users to stream at a resolution of up to 480p. Netflix Mobile+ also supports up to 480p for streaming and allows users to watch on their laptop or desktop computer as well as mobile phones and tablets.

The new plans are much cheaper than Netflix’s existing three packages, Basic at ZAR 99, Standard at ZAR 139 and Premium at ZAR 169. They support streaming through a smart TV interface as well as higher video quality.

Netflix Mobile and Mobile+ have become available in a number of other countries, with Mobile+ first launching in India in July.

Netflix South Africa has launched a new mobile price plan at ZAR 49 per month, together with a feature it calls "play partial download", MyBroadband reported. Subscribing to the mobile plan lets customers watch Netflix from a tablet or smartphone, but not a computer or smart TV. It allows a single active standard definition (520p) stream at any given time.

Realness Institute has opened its call for submissions for its Episodic Lab development project in partnership with Netflix. Episodic Lab is open to screenwriters from Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, the three countries where Netflix is currently focusing its African Originals strategy. The lab will take place online from 01 June 2021 to 31 August 2021 where selected writers will work on developing pitch documents for their story concepts.

South Africa govt to enforce 30% local content for streaming services

South Africa's Department of Communications and Digital Technologies is working to enforce 30 percent local content on video-on-demand services including Netflix and Showmax, in order to promote local content and languages. In a recently drafted white paper presented to parliament, streaming platforms will be mandated to offer at least 30 percent South African content.

Telkom South Africa and SABC launch new streaming service TelkomONE

Telkom South Africa has partnered with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) to launch a new online streaming service named TelkomONE. The five-year partnership is a digital carriage agreement for the SABC and will include TV programmes and radio on a single online platform. TelkomONE will stream SABC television channels 1, 2, Sport, and Education as well as all nineteen SABC radio stations.

SABC to launch own streaming service by early 2021

The South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is finalising plans to bring out its own streaming platform and services in the early part of 2021. Spokesperson Mmoni Seapolelo told Channel24 that it is planning to launch a video and audio streaming service in line with changing industry trends and consumer needs. At this stage, Seapolelo said, the SABC is not in a position to provide more detail, due to the commercial sensitivity of the information.

Telkom South Africa brings out VoD service TelkomONE on 30 November

Telkom South Africa said it will bring out a video-on-demand (VoD) streaming platform called TelkomONE on 30 November. It will be available on the web, on mobile apps and via streaming box through daily, weekly and monthly subscription packages but Telkom has not published its subscription rates. The service will include television channels from most major networks.

South African free-to-air service e.tv is planning to extend its Openview satellite-TV offering and roll out Openview Plus by October as a video streaming service, reports News24. Openview Plus will provide eMedia's Openview channels and content as a direct-to-consumer offer through the internet and will probably be available as a bundled offer along with Openview Connect, a new broadband access service.

Netflix discounts first month to as little as 5 cents in France

Netflix has started testing a discounted price the first month for new subscribers in France. While the free 30-day trial is no longer available, in France new customers can pay a reduced price of EUR 0.05 to EUR 3.99 per month, local site Numerama reports. The exact amount varies, but may be EUR 0.05, 0.99 or 3.99 for 30 days.

Netflix increases prices for all but basic service in Austria

Netflix is increasing the price for the streaming service in Austria, Der Standard reports. The price for the premium subscription, which includes videos in Ultra HD, HDR and playback on up to four devices at the same time, will increase by EUR 2.00 to EUR 17.99 per month. The price for subscriptions to watch content in HD increases by EUR 1.00 to EUR 11.99 per month. The basic tariff, which offers streaming for one device in standard definition, remains unchanged at EUR 7.99 per month.

South Africa regulator looks at DStv plans to distribute Netflix, Amazon

The investigation comes after DStv announced plans to become a 'one-stop-shop' where customers pay a single bill and get access to all streaming content – including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. In its recent financial report, it said it had signed deals with Netflix and Amazon to integrate both of these services into its Explora decoder. MultiChoice CFO Tim Jacobs said these agreements are part of a new streaming platform MultiChoice would launch that would include content from international players.

Netflix has started testing another new price tier in India, local blog Androidpure reports. The Mobile+ plan gives users access to the streaming service over one mobile device or computer, in HD quality. It costs INR 349 per month, slightly less than cheapest standard tier at INR 499, which includes TV access.

CineMagic launches in South Africa on MTN Play and Vodacom Video Play

New Video on Demand (VoD) streaming service CineMagic is now available to mobile users via the Vodacom Video Play and MTN Play platforms. The service provides mobile users with short form videos, series and documentaries that are designed for smaller screens. It was launched in June by Exceptional Rights and offers director-driven, well acted and high-value curated video content from five to 30 minutes in duration.
