New French law to curb 'fake news' during elections faces delay

Legislation to fight the spread of fake news during election campaigns was debated by France's lower house of parliament on 7 June, but the planned vote was postponed due to insufficient time to debate a large number of proposed amendments to the text. French president Emmanuel Macron unveiled plans for the new law in January, but political opposition has mounted on the mechanisms to identify false information, under fears that freedom of expression could be at risk.
