Nokia to cut another 3,500 jobs
Nokia announced plans to cut another 3,500 jobs as it streamlines its manufacturing. The company will close its factory in Cluj, Romania by the end of this year, resulting in the loss of 2,200 jobs. Production will shift to the company's sites in Asia. It also plans to scale back hardware production and focus more on local software and sales packages at its factories in Salo, Finland, Komarom, Hungary, and Reynosa, Mexico. Nokia expects to know by the first quarter of 2012 how many employees will be affected at the three sites. The company is also creating a Location & Commerce business, consolidating location assets including Navteq and social location services. The operation's development efforts will be based in Berlin, Boston, Chicago and other supporting sites, and operations in Bonn, Germany and Malvern, US will be closed, resulting in the loss of 1,300 jobs. Nokia is also starting consultations on job reductions in sales, marketing and corporate functions. The company said the restructuring is part of efforts first announced in April, aimed at reducing costs and speeding up decision-making across the group.
