Nokia, Vodafone Italia testing cloud-based RAN tech

Nokia has announced that it's teamed up with Vodafone to test the potential of its cloud-based radio access (Cloud RAN) technology at the operator's testing facility in Italy. The trial was designed to evaluate how the macro network technology could help the operator to transition from 4G to 5G services and IoT, with the Nokia AirScale Cloud RAN platform running on the AirFrame NFV infrastructure and splitting baseband processing functionality between real-time and non real-time functions. Nokia said its Cloud RAN achieved all of Vodafone's key performance criteria for throughput, capacity
