Norwegian communications market grows 2.4% in 2015

The Norwegian communications market grew by 2.4 percent in 2015 to a turnover of NOK 34.26 billion, the market regulator NKOM said in its annual report. Growth came from fixed broadband (+6.7%) and mobile telephony (+3.5%), while fixed-line services fell 12.2 percent. Investments increased 9.5 percent last year to NOK 8.54 billion, led by an increase of NOK 785 million in fibre and 4G spending to over NOK 4.7 billion.

The NKOM noted that for the first time the number of residential fibre subscribers passed those on DSL and cable. Over 90,000 fibre subscriptions were added last year for a total of almost 640,000. Total residential broadband connections rose by 60,000 to over 1.9 million. Cable broadband added around 21,000 residential subscribers, while DSL lost customers.

In the mobile market, the number of subscriptions fell slightly, by 0.4 percent to 5.715 million. NKOM said the drop was in prepaid, while contract subscriptions increased. M2M showed strong growth, increasing the number of SIMs by 12.4 percent to over 1.2 million. Data traffic on Norwegian mobile networks totaled more than 103 million GB in 2015, an increase of 62 percent. SMS and MMS traffic also continued to grow, up 3.1 percent to 6.49 billion messages, and voice traffic increased 2.8 percent to 14.04 billion minutes.

In terms of market share, Telenor continued to lead with a 51.3 percent share of revenues, unchanged from 2014. Telia was second with 19.3 percent, followed by Get and NextGenTel with each 3.2 percent.
