Norwegian consumer body urges tighter security for smart devices

Friday 15 March 2019 | 13:02 CET | News

Three out of four members of the public are concerned about cybersecurity and privacy of smart products, the Norwegian Consumer Council said. The organisation is calling for minimum requirements for cybersecurity in internet-connected products. Its survey found three quarters of people fear that connected devices could be hacked and their privacy put at risk, with almost as many worried about viruses, poor quality, and incompatibility.

Consumer director Inger Lise Blyverket said such worries are "not unfounded", with innumerable examples of products "riddled" with cybersecurity flaws leaving people vulnerable to hacking, fraud and identity theft.

In conjunction with a public inquiry from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security's ICT security committee, the Consumer Council is presenting a set of suggestions that could make connected products safer.

These are binding minimum requirements for cybersecurity, increased enforcement for connected products, making cybersecurity a part of public procurement routines, facilitation of vulnerability disclosures and response, and increased guidance from industry actors in cooperation with authorities.

Blyverket pointed out that inadequate cybersecurity is not only a consumer challenge but could threaten critical infrastructure, for example by hijacking connected thermostats in a large area and overloading the power grid. The Consumer Council is urging the Norwegian authorities to play an active role in the European Commission's work towards making connected products more secure.
