Norwegian govt holds hearing on legal amendment to allow autonomous ship pilotage

Norwegian Minister of Transport and Communication Ketil Solvik-Olsen said the government is has put changes to the national pilotage law out to consultation, in order to support innovations in shipping.  He said the construction of the Yara Birkeland, an autonomous vessel that will travel on the Trondheim Fjord, shows Norway's leadership in this sector. Solvik-Olsen said self-piloting ships could improve productivity and ensure safety, as human error often causes accidents at sea.
