NRW to appoint 35 managers to accelerate broadband roll-out

Tuesday 17 April 2018 | 14:25 CET | News

The German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) announced plans to appoint 35 “subsidy managers” to support and accelerate the roll out of broadband internet in every administrative district of the state and ensure NRW’s municipalities are able to access broadband subsidies, reported TelTarif.de. These subsidy managers will be based out of five “Gigabit.NRW” business centres throughout the state and help improve and professionalize the work of NRW’s 52 current broadband coordinators, they wrote.

The government said it also plans to hold a “Gigabit Summit” for NRW in July to entice more companies to invest in fibre-optic internet as well as produce a new digital strategy and a gigabit atlas mapping the broadband rollout across the state before the summer. Still, NRW’s digital minister warned that the German government needs to introduce an “unbureaucratic broadband programme” that enables the state to adequately invest the EUR 7 billion in subsidies called for in its broadband roll out.

The coalition agreement of NRW’s current government led by the conservative CDU and business-friendly FDP calls for the government to erect a statewide gigabit network by 2025, while all schools and business parks should have access to gigabit-speed internet by 2022. Currently only one-eight of NRW’s 5,400 state-run schools and 8 percent of its business parks have a fibre-optic connection, wrote TelTarif.
