NTRA considers offering new mobile frequencies for Egypt's 4 operators

Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) says it is considering ways to offer new frequency bands to mobile operators, the Daily News reported. Acting Executive President of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) Mustafa Abdul Wahid said that the price and conditions will be determined according to available frequency and type of bandwidth.

He said that in the case that only a limited set of bands is offered, then Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat and Telecom Egypt will be invited to compete for them. The other option is to allocate bands separately for each of the four operators, which would be possible if the relevant bodies allocated a larger set of bands, which could be divided. Abdul Wahid said that the four companies have officially applied for new frequencies to cover the expected growth in customers using 4G services.

Two months after launching LTE, the number of clients has exceeded 10 million, according to NTRA. Vodafone Egypt has the largest number of users, with a client base of more than 42 million. Telecom Egypt has the smallest customer base at 1.6 million subscribers, being the newest company in the market.
