Egypt officially launches locally manufactured smartphone
Egypt officially launched its first locally manufactured smart phone during the ongoing 21st edition of Cairo ICT 2017, reports Amwal Alghad. Minister of communication, Yasser El Kady said the smartphone has 45 percent of its components locally produced. 

El Kady has gifted the new mobile which is manufactured by Sico Technology to the President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi.

Infinix says it has started manufacturing its smartphones in Egypt, the Daily News reported. MediaTek says it will cooperate with Egyptian companies to develop and produce educational tablets, according to Ramy Osman, MediaTek Director for Middle East and Africa (MEA). He said the cooperation with government agencies in Egypt in electronics manufacturing is part of a move towards local production. Oman said MediaTek attaches great importance to the Egyptian market, and considers it one of the most important ones in the Middle East.

SICO to launch first Egyptian tablet in July

SICO Technology chairman Mohamed Salem has announced the launch of the first Egyptian tablet, the SICO Express 3, by 06 July, reports EgyptToday. Salem said the tablet has been manufactured in Assiut, with a local manufacturing rate of up to 45 percent. It said 10,000 tablets will be officially launched on the market within two weeks at a price EGP 1,149.

SICO launches first Egyptian-made smartphone in Saladin's Citadel

The Company for Silicon Industries (SICO) has selected Saladin's Citadel in Cairo to launch the first Egyptian-manufactured smartphone. SICO mobile phones represent the first local brand in the industry, as the percentage of local components is 45 percent. The company's factory is in New Assiut Park, and there have been EGP 400 million of investments, according to news agency MENA.

Xiaomi has launched its Redmi 5A smartphone in Egypt for EGP 1,888. It has a 5-inch HD display, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor, 3000mAh battery, 5 MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture and a 13 MP rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF).

Nokia 2 smartphone goes on sale in Egypt

HMD Global has launched the Nokia 2 smartphone in Egypt, reports the Daily News. It will be available in black, grey, white, copper and black at EGP 1,750. Battery capacity is 4,100 mA and a charge can last up to two days.

Huawei's market share drops in Egypt in H2

Huawei's share of the Egyptian mobile phone market fell to 13.1 percent at the end of December 2017 from 15.9 percent at the end of June, the Daily News reported. Samsung had the largest share of mobile phone sales in the Egyptian market by the end of December, according to Statista, and Huawei came second.

Egypt reaches 23.6 mln smartphones at end-2017 with 9% rise expected this year

The number of smartphones in the Egyptian market increased by 12.3 percent to 23.6 million at the end of 2017 from 21.0 million at the end of 2016, according to the Daily News, citing a Tableau Software report. The increase was supported by the penetration of mobile services and 4G. It forecasts that the number of smartphones in Egypt will reach 25.8 million at the end of 2018, up by 9.3 percent from December 2017, rising to 27.9 million by the end of 2019.

UN opens technology innovation lab in Egypt

The UN has announced the opening of its African Technology Innovation Lab (UNTIL) in Egypt, on the sidelines of the Cairo ICT conference, reports the Daily News. The launch of this laboratory comes within the framework of the UN plan to deploy a global network of technology innovation labs across the world.  Egypt was selected to be the headquarters of UNTIL inAfrica because of the great development made in Egypt in the field of ICT and entrepreneurship.

NTRA considers offering new mobile frequencies for Egypt's 4 operators

Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) says it is considering ways to offer new frequency bands to mobile operators, the Daily News reported. Acting Executive President of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) Mustafa Abdul Wahid said that the price and conditions will be determined according to available frequency and type of bandwidth.
