Obama to back self-driving cars with USD 4 bln

US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx will unveil at the Detroit auto show on 14 January a plan to develop a national programme for autonomous driving technology within the next six months, writes Recode.

President Obama plans to insert USD 4 billion into the 2017 budget to back a 10-year programme whose aim is to support and quicken vehicle automation projects.

The states, which set the rules for driverless cars, will follow the new blanket national policy which will be set by the transportation agency. The new national rules will allow fully driverless cars, which is good news for Google's driverless car project.

US govt to allow states to create own rules for self-driving

The US individual states will be allowed by the federal government to make their own rules for regulating self-driving vehicles, writes The Wall Street Journal citing National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's chief, Mark Rosekind. Rosekind said the NHTSA agency plans to release framework documents in July that will serve as the foundation for national regulations concerning autonomous vehicles. The framework and any rules that may follow will allow states to set their additional standards, he said. H

Google, Ford plan self-driving vehicles venture - report

Google and Ford plan to create a joint venture that will build self-driving vehicles using Google technology, Yahoo Autos reported, citing sources, which added that the partnership will be announced by Ford at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. The deal is understood to be non-exclusive; Google has been talking to several other automakers for some time about using its self-driving systems.

Apple met with California officials earlier this summer to discuss self-driving cars, the Guardian reported, citing a number of documents. Google to issue monthly reports on self-driving cars

Google will start to issue monthly reports on its self-driving cars following a second accident in under a week. The company told Bloomberg in an e-mailed statement that the reports will summarise project activity, data points and any incidents. In the latest incident, an autonomous vehicle was hit in the rear at a stoplight in Mountain View, California on 4 June. Google said there have been 13 accidents since the start of the project 6 years ago and none have been its vehicles' fault.
