Oculus partners Xiaomi to bring VR headset to China

Facebook's Oculus has partnered with Xiaomi to bring its virtual reality headsets to China. At CES, the company said Xiaomi will be its hardware partner for the global launch of Oculus Go. In addition, the companies jointly announced the Mi VR Standalone, a VR headset based on Oculus technology exclusively for the Chinese market.

Both headsets are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 Mobile VR Platform. The Oculus Go is the low-cost headset unveiled by Facebook last year, and the Mi VR Standalone shares the same core hardware features and design, the companies said. 

The Mi device supports the Oculus Mobile SDK, enabling existing Oculus developers to bring their content to the Mi VR platform in China. Xiaomi is working directly with Oculus developers to localize some of the most popular content from the Oculus Store and to bring it to the Mi VR Store in China.

The partnership follows former Xiaomi VP Hugo Barra moving to Facebook last year to head up its VR activities.

Xiaomi unveils flagship Mi 8 smartphones, standalone VR headset

Xiaomi has unveiled its new flagship smartphone series, the Mi 8, at an event Shenzen, as well as its standalone VR headset developed with Oculus. The Mi 8 and Mi 8 SE will launch first in China in June, while a more premium edition, the Mi 8 Explorer with in-display fingerprint reader and 3D face unlock, will be available later.

HTC starts pre-orders for Vive Pro HMD at USD 799

HTC Vive announced that the HTC Vive Pro Head Mounted Display (HMD) will be available for USD 799 with global pre-orders starting on 19 March. The company also reduced the price of the existing Vive full kit by USD 100 to USD 499. All Vive Pro HMDs purchased by 3 June, which will begin shipping on 5 April, will come with a free six-month trial to Viveport Subscription, where consumers can choose up to 5 titles per month from the more than 400 titles available.

HTC Vive announced eight pieces of VR content inspired by Steven Spielberg's new action adventure, 'Ready Player One'. VR headset shipments continue to increase and exceeded 1 million units for the first time in Q3, according to a study by Canalys. Barra moves to Facebook to head VR activities

Hugo Barra has left Xiaomi in order to head up Facebook's virtual reality efforts. The news was announced by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on the social network. Barra's title will be Vice President of VR. This follows the reogranisation of Oculus in December, into mobile and PC groups. CEO Brendan Iribe stepped down in order to lead the company's PC division, and parent company Facebook went in search of a new CEO for the VR unit.
