Ofcom confirms new 'end of contract' notice rules for broadband, phone providers

UK regulator Ofcom has announced new rules for broadband, phone and TV customers to be informed when their contract is ending and shown the best details available. This is part of Ofcom's 'Fairness for Customers' programme. 

Research by Ofcom shows that over 20 million customers in the UK have passed their initial contract period, and many of these could be overpaying. Customers bundling their landline and broadband services pay, on average, around 20 percent more when they are out of contract. This increases to 20 percent more for customers bundling pay-TV with landline and broadband. 

Under the new rules, providers will be forced to warn customers between 10-40 days before their contract ends, with these alerts to be sent by e-mail, letter or text. They must include information on the contract end date; the price paid before this data; any changes to service and price paid after the end of the contract term; any notice period required to terminate; and the best deals available, including telling loyal customers what prices they offer to new customers. Customers who stay with their provider without signing a new contract will be sent reminders each year about their provider's best deals.
