Global satellite communications network OneWeb is leading a group of UK space technology companies working to develop a new beam-hopping satellite which would enable satellites to switch which part of the world they cover.
The partners have received funding of over GBP 32 million from the UK Space Agency, through the ESA's Sunrise Programme, for a demonstration satellite due for launch in 2022. This beam-hopping satellite would be able to remotely direct beams to boost coverage in specific locations, helping to manage real-time increases in commercial demand or responding to emergencies.
OneWeb's partners in the project include SatixFy, Celestia UK and Astroscale UK. Farnborough-based SatixFy is developing the satellites pilot beam-hopping payload, as well as the user terminal, with funding of over GBP 25 million. Edinburgh-based Celestia has secured GBP 4.4 million to develop and test smart ground station technology with multi-beam electronically steered antenna.
