OneWeb secures GBP 18 mln funding for 5G satellite network

UK-based OneWeb has secured GBP 18 million of UK Space Agency funding through the European Space Agency to support development of its next-generation satellite network. This is the result of UK investment in the ESA's telecoms research programme (ARTES). 

The OneWeb global communications network will consist of around 650 satellites initially, expanding to more than 900 over time. This could be used to provide affordable internet connectivity to people and businesses worldwide. 

The OneWeb Sunrise programme will initially focus on technologies for the next generation of satellite payloads, space debris removal and ground connections. The UK Space Agency funding will also be used to support automation and AI technology to manage the constellation and its interaction with terrestrial networks to enable 5G global connectivity. The first set of 10 OneWeb satellites are due to launch from Europe's French Guiana spaceport on Ariane rockets in the week of 26 February.

OneWeb, Intellian enter user terminal partnership

OneWeb entered into a partnership with Intellian to build user terminals designed specifically for remote enterprise networks, mobile backhaul expansion and remote connectivity needs. The user terminals will be the units provided to customers to enable the high-speed, low latency service that OneWeb's global satellite constellation will deliver. These user terminals will be suited for a range of use cases including connecting businesses in rural areas, schools, hospitals, farms and community centres.

OneWeb raises USD 1.25 billion for global satellite network

OneWeb has raised another USD 1.25 billion to further its project to create a global satellite internet network. Its largest fundraising round to date brings the total funds raised to USD 3.4 billion. This round was led by SoftBank Group, Grupo Salinas, Qualcomm Technologies and the government of Rwanda.

Atos supplies testing equipment for OneWeb satellite constellation programme

Atos said that it is contributing to the production of OneWeb satellites with testing equipment used at Airbus production facilities in Toulouse and Florida. The news follows the launch on 27 February of the first six low-earth orbit satellites in the OneWeb constellation, which should grow to a 650-strong fleet by 2021, delivering broadband services across the world.

Arianespace launches first OneWeb satellites

Arianespace successfully completed the first of the 21 launches for OneWeb's satellite constellation on 27 February from the Guiana Space Center, Europe's spaceport in French Guiana. By operating this flight, Arianespace said it contributes to the fulfilment of its customer's ultimate ambition to provide internet access to everyone, everywhere.

OneWeb inks first client agreements for network commercialisation

OneWeb announced during MWC19 that it has secured its first customer contracts to deliver its satellite communications services. OneWeb has signed an agreement to provide Talia, the teleport, satellite and network operator, with a service for the Quika platform to offer consumer broadband internet and community Wi-Fi across a number of regions including Africa and the Middle East. OneWeb's global satellite broadband service will come on stream for Talia starting in 2021, with virtually all of Talia's market
