Only one in five European students attend schools with 100 Mbps-plus broadband

Friday 15 March 2019 | 15:48 CET | News

Fewer than one in five European students currently attend schools that have access to high-speed internet above 100 Mbps, according to a wide-ranging study of ICT in education published by the European Commission. The survey of head teachers, teachers, students and parents from the 28 EU Member States, Norway, Iceland and Turkey covered a wide range of topics, including access to digital technologies, the use of digital technologies by teachers and pupils, the digital home environment of students and schools’ digital policies.

Other key findings include the fact that 79 percent of lower secondary school students and 76 percent of upper secondary school students never or almost never engage in coding or programming at school. The study also revealed that more than six out of ten European students are taught by teachers who expand their knowledge through ICT training courses in their own time and that only about half of students attending secondary schools have parents that feel they know enough about their child’s online behaviour.

The EC said its strategies for boosting digital connectivity and skills in schools are targeting these and other needs. It has proposed that all schools should have access to gigabit internet connectivity by 2025 and wants to see 50 percent of schools in Europe taking part in Code Week events by 2020. The EC is also helping schools and Member States to adapt to digital change via the Erasmus+ programme.
