Ooredoo, Facebook, GSMA start digital literacy campaign in Myanmar

Wednesday 12 June 2019 | 09:22 CET | News
SmarTone Ooredoo, Facebook and the GSMA have launched a digital literacy campaign in Myanmar. The initiative aims to raise awareness and increase adoption of mobile internet services in Myanmar. Dubbed ‘Internet 1O1’ (Internet One on One), the campaign is designed to inform and educate first time and new internet users, through one-on-one training at Ooredoo retail points and exclusive stores across the country, mainly in rural areas.

According to data released by GSMA Intelligence, nearly 21 million people are currently using mobile internet services in Myanmar, out of a population of 54.1 million. The report shows connectivity is mainly hindered by the lack of digital literacy. The Internet 1O1 project is expected to guide users through the multiple uses and benefits of the internet and use the service responsibly.

Internet 1O1 will be available to consumers in Ooredoo retail stores. In-store promoters will present consumers with internet education materials, including a video explaining what the internet is, how to access it and how to stay safe online.

At end-2018, market competitor Telenor Myanmar launched an educational web series called ‘Let the dreams come true’. Produced in partnership with Myan ICT for Development Organization (MIDO), this web series supported Telenor’s lighthouse programme to empower rural and urban communities with basic smartphone-based digital literacy skills.
