Open Fiber drives Italy to 43% growth in fibre subscribers

Friday 15 March 2019 | 10:12 CET | News
Italy experienced an “exceptional growth” of FTTH/FTTB subscribers in the year to September 2018, according to a report from Idate for the FTTH Council Europe. Thanks above all to the contribution of wholesale-only provider Open Fiber, the country went from 4.4 million homes passed in September 2017 to 6.3 million a year later, a 43.1 percent increase compared to the European average growth of 15.7 percent.

In a statement released to coincide with the FTTH Council Europe’s annual conference, Open Fiber CEO Elisabetta Ripa said: "The numbers issued in Amsterdam highlight the role that Open Fiber is playing in promoting the country's infrastructure development. The need to build entirely fibre-optic networks entirely in FTTH mode, capable of fully supporting the ongoing digital revolution, above all in areas most affected by the digital divide, is becoming increasingly widespread and perceived on a continental level.”

Open Fiber last week presented its high-speed broadband rollout plan for 2019, confirming that construction work will begin in 2,000 digital divide localities all over the country this year, in addition to the 1,000 locations where work begun in 2018. The operator said it expects to complete 850 of those rollouts by the end of the year.

Open Fiber has won three national broadband auctions covering all 20 Italian regions and a total of 7,635 localities since 2017.
