The Open Fiber wholesale-only venture of Italian utility giant Enel and state lender CDP has announced a deal with Udine city council to build a wholesale fibre-optic network in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia locality in a total investment of around EUR 14 million. The company will roll out 35,000km of cable over the next 18 months to bring FTTH services at speeds of up to 1Gbps to some 40,000 homes and offices.

The company revealed in September that it had already connected some 2 million homes to its fibre-optic network and is targeting a total of 19 million households and businesses by 2022 in a total investment of around EUR 6.5 billion.
