A month after launching a 5G pre-commercial trial in Prato, Italian operators Wind Tre and Open Fiber have inaugurated a similar project to test 5G technologies via the 3.7-3.8 GHz band in the city of Aquila in the Lazio region. The operators will be partnering with China’s ZTE as well as local universities and businesses to comprehensively test and verify 5G technical performance, network architecture, 4G/5G network integration and future 5G use cases, including AR/VR, smart city, public safety, 5G healthcare and Industry 4.0. The trial is scheduled to last until 31 December 2021.

Italy's Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) gave the go ahead for Open Fiber and Wind Tre to conduct 5G trials in Prato and L’Aquila, while Vodafone Italia will focus on Milan, and Telecom Italia, Fastweb and Huawei will carry out tests in Bari and Matera in the south.
