Opera acquires VPN specialist SurfEasy
Opera Software has acquired the company SurfEasy, a developer of VPN software. Started four years ago in Canada, SurfEasy offers mobile and desktop VPN software which it markets as a way for internet users to keep communications secure and private. The company offers a free plan with 500 MB data each month and subscription plans with unlimited data and additional features such as ad blocking.

For Opera, the software will help it better address in its browser products the growing concern for privacy and security among internet users. VPNs can be integrated in the browser, also offering opportunities for monetisation through subscriptions and ad-based services. SurfEasy said it will continue to serve existing customers and expects to expand and improve services as part of Opera. No financial details of the takeover were disclosed.
