Operators sign agreement for Asia Africa Europe-1 cable
Seventeen telecommunications companies have signed a construction and maintenance agreement for the planned Asia Africa Europe-1 (AAE-1) cable system. The cable will interconnect Hong Kong, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe and is expected to be ready for service in 2016. Participating operators include PCCW Global, PTCL, Viettel, China Unicom, Telecom Egypt, Etisalat, Omantel and Ooredoo. PCCW Global unveiled plans to land the cable at the Cape D'Aguilar Cable Station in Hong Kong, and then extend connectivity to its city data centre.

The AAE-1 Consortium and TE SubCom have announced that contract for the majority of segments of the AAE-1 system has come into force. Time dotCom to invest USD 44 mln in AAE-1 submarine cable

Malaysian fixed-line operator Time dotCom expects its total investment in the AAE-1 submarine cable system to reach USD 44 million, the company said in a statement. The investment includes a landing station and 1.88 Tbps of capacity on the system. The AAE-1 submarine cable will connect Asia to Europe through the Middle East, with landing stations planned for Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Yemen, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Greece and France.

China Unicom to launch 4G services on 18 March

China Unicom will introduce its 4G services on 18 March, following rivals China Telecom and China Mobile. Unicom's TD-LTE services will initially launch in 25 cities across China and will expanded to 100 cities by the end of this year, the Shanghai Daily reports. The operator, which has earmarked CNY 10 billion for 4G investments this year, further plans to launch FDD-LTE services after the government issues licences for the standard.
