Optus to complete 2G network shutdown on 1 August
Australian operator Optus will finalise the shutdown of its 2G network on 1 August. 2G services across QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, SA and TAS will be turned off. This is the second and final phase of the shutdown. In the first phase, Optus shut down its 2G services across NT and WA in April.

Virgin Mobile and Optus Wholesale service providers using the 2G GSM network  will also be affected, the operator said. The 2G shutdown is expected to enable Optus to review options to re-allocate some of this spectrum to upgrade customer experience and mobile services, as well as investigate emerging technologies such as 5G.

New Zealand mobile operator 2degrees will shut down 2G services on its nationwide mobile network in March 2018. 2degrees reports it has not sold 2G mobile phones since 2015 and has been actively encouraging 2G customers to move to 3G and 4G phones for the past year. 2G customers will now have six months to upgrade.

Optus to improve mobile coverage in Central Coast

Australian operator Optus will build or upgrade 41 sites across the Central Coast with an investment of AUD 10.2 million. The move aims to significantly improve mobile coverage across the region. Areas scheduled for these improvements are spread across the Central Coast, from Umina Beach, Bateau Bay, Mt White, Gosford and 37 other locations via Optus standalone investment.

Australian operator Optus has announced it will start closing its 2G mobile network next week with services in NT and WA to be shut off from 3 April. All Optus 2G services are scheduled to shut down by August, Optus also said. Virgin Mobile and Optus Wholesale service providers using the 2G GSM network will also be affected.

Vodafone Australia announced plans to shut down its GSM network on 30 September 2017. It is the last of the three operators to announce the planned 2G closure, with Telstra shutting down its network at the end of this year and Optus next year.
