Oracle delivers cloud infrastructure for Zoom online video conferencing

Zoom Video Communications has selected Oracle as cloud infrastructure provider for its core online meeting service.

Zoom needed additional cloud capacity immediately to meet surging demand for its services, including an increase to 300 million daily meeting participants worldwide. Within hours of deployment, the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure supported hundreds of thousands of concurrent Zoom meeting participants, Oracle said.

Zoom is now enabling millions of concurrent meeting users on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. It is currently transferring over 7 petabytes of data through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure servers daily.

Facebook announced a new feature for video calls called Messenger Rooms. This allows users to launch a call from Messenger or Facebook and invite up to 50 people to join for an unlimited time, even those without a Facebook account. Zoom enables paying users to customise data centre region

Zoom announced that paying customers will be able to choose from 18 April from which data centre they want their traffic over the videoconferencing platform routed. Users will be able to opt in or out of data centre regions. The company said the new feature was aimed at giving customers more control over their data and the service. Zoom Conference Room Connectors (CRCs) in disabled regions will not be allowed to connect to meetings or webinars.

Google bans Zoom software from employee devices

Zoom videoconferencing software has been banned from the devices of Google employees on security concerns, BuzzFeed News reported. Zoom's software, in competition with Google's own Meet app, has seen explosive growth since the start of the covid-19 pandemic but also growing concerns about its security. The company earlier hired a former Facebook security chief to help with its security review.

German Foreign Office bans use of Zoom on official service devices - report

The German Federal Foreign Office has banned the use of Zoom on devices used for official activities due to risks associated with the IT system, Handelsblatt reports citing a letter sent to employees of the foreign service. In the letter, the Foreign Office cites media reports saying that  Zoom has critical vulnerabilities and continues to have significant security and data protection problems.

Zoom hires former Facebook security chief to help with security review

Zoom Video Communications announced it has hired Alex Stamos as an outside advisor to help in its planned security review. He was previously Facebook's Chief Security Officer, until leaving the company in 2018 to become a researcher at Stanford university. Zoom also formed an advisory council with other security specialists.
