Orange has announced a 40 percent expansion to its fibre-optic deployment plans in Spain, committing to reaching an additional 4 million households by the end of 2020 on top of the target of 10 million households by the end of 2016. Orange’s FTTH coverage in Spain currently reaches 5.2 million households following its acquisition of broadband operator Jazztel earlier this year. As a result, the company will cover 80 percent of all Spanish cities with more than 20,000 inhabitants in five years’ time thanks to a total accumulated investment in its FTTH network of between EUR 1.5 and 1.7 billion.
The 14 million target is equivalent to the number of homes Telefonica was hoping to cover with its fibre network by the end of 2015, although the former incumbent said its plans remain dependent on the sweeping changes to the fixed broadband market proposed by communications watchdog CNMC. Orange’s other main rival, Vodafone, currently covers around 8.4 million households thanks to its acquisition of Ono last year, with the combined entity targeting 11 million homes by the end of the year.
