ZTE said it has been awarded a contract to help Orange Spain roll out commercial 10 Gbps-capable symmetric passive optical network (XGS-PON) services in an initial five Spanish cities. The offer was first announced last year and will provide users in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Zaragoza with broadband at speeds of up to 10 Gbps.
The live test of ZTE’s F8648P XGS-PON optical network terminal (ONT) carried out on Orange’s network last year showed that the ONT achieved an uplink/downlink speed of 8.6 Gbps, close to the theoretical peak rate of XGS-PON. ZTE added that its terminal provides a 10 GE downlink port to meet users’ current and future high-speed access requirements as well as support for eight spatial streams and Wi-Fi 6 technology, enabling up to 6 Gbps physical layer rates and a maximum of 128 end-user devices.
Orange previously said the combination of XGS-PON fibre and Wi-Fi 6 will enable the connection of a multitude of devices at maximum speed and quality, paving the way for better 4K video streaming, online gaming, top-quality video calls plus future uses such as VR or video holograms.
The company is aiming to reach 1 million homes by 2022 and will be offering the XGS-PON service for an additional EUR 10 a month via its Love Total Plus and Love Total Plus 4 plans for residential customers, and its Love Empresa 3 and 5 rates for freelancers and SMEs.
