Orange has announced at its Investor Day in London that it’s accelerating its Spanish fibre-optic rollout and is now targeting 16 million connected households by 2020, up from 14 million. The service offers symmetric speeds of up to 1 Gbps and is now available in 11.6 million all over the country, with the initial target set to be reached sometime next year. Some EUR 2 billion is being made available to bring FTTH to a further 2 million homes, including more than 70 percent of towns with at least 5,000 inhabitants and 90 percent of those with 10,000 or more.

The announcement comes after Orange Spain reported that fibre customers were up 47.7 percent year-on-year to 2.1 million on 30 September, representing over 50 percent of the company's fixed broadband customer base for the first time. It recently begun offering a symmetric 500 Mbps fibre-optic service to all convergent customers and activated a 1 Gbps service for businesses throughout Spain.
