OTTs to cost operators USD 14 bln in lost revenues - study

Telecoms operators are expected to lose around USD 14 billion in potential voice and messaging traffic to OTTs such as WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook in 2014, according to a new report from Juniper Research. The figure is a 26 percent increase on the revenues lost in 2013 and can be mainly attributed to a combination of Instant Messaging, VoIP and social media substitution, as well as additional costs due to the scale of signalling traffic. A number of markets, including Italy, Spain and the UK, have seen mobile voice revenues fall to less than 60 percent of their value five years' ago, said
