OTTs to face stricter data protection rules in EU - report

The European Commission will propose greater controls for OTT service providers such as Microsoft's Skype and Facebook's WhatsApp on how they handle customer data under a reform of the ePrivacy directive to be proposed in January, according to a draft document seen by Reuters. Web services will have to guarantee the confidentiality of communications and obtain users' consent to process their location data, the same as required in the EU's data protection law due to come into force in 2018. Telecom operators have called for the ePrivacy directive to be repealed, as many of its provisions
