Over USD 275 bln lost to illegal downloads in H1 2014-study

Over USD 275 billion of digital content was pirated through peer-to-peer (p2p) networks during the first six months of 2014, according to a wide-ranging survey of files shared via the via the open source BitTorrent protocol conducted by big data start-up Tru Optik. The company said more than 500 million unique IPs shared files globally in the first six months of the year, resulting in around 17.4 billion downloads. The corresponding report on 'Digital Media Unmonetised Demand and Peer-to-Peer File Sharing' estimates that 29.2 million new p2p users downloaded TV and movies in the second
