Parliament calls for tough EC stance on telecom competition

The European Parliament has called for the EU to take a tougher line on competition in the telecom market. In a resolution adopting the latest annual report on EU competition policy, the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs said that "effective competition is the best driver of efficient investment and provides maximum consumer benefit in terms of choice, price and quality". Noting that incumbent operators have a "staggering" 80 percent of the next-generation broadband market, the resolution called on the European Commission "to enforce properly both ex post and ex ante competition
