Pentagon mulls creating 5G network shared with civilian mobile phones

US officials are considering building a new 5G wireless network that may also be used by Silicon Valley giants and other businesses, writes the Wall Street Journal. The Department of Defense issued a request for information on 18 September that may open the door for investors to bid on contracts to create a  local mobile network for both the military and for commercial operators. That dual-use structure may allow companies to link connected cars, factories and hospitals over ultrafast 5G signals without bidding for the licences at auction.
