Niantic, the maker of the Pokemon Go mobile game, announced plans to launch a mobile augmented reality game based on the Harry Potter books by JK Rowling. The company partnered with Warner Bros, maker of the Harry Potter films, and WB Games' San Francisco development team to design the game.
Expected to be called 'Harry Potter: Wizards Unite', the game will allow players to become wizards and explore the world created by Rowling. Players will learn spells, explore their real world neighbourhoods and cities to discover and fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies, Niantic said.
The game is set for release in the second half of 2018, CEO John Hanke told the Financial Times in an interview. He also confirmed that Pokemon Go will launch for the first time in China, thanks to a partnership with local company NetEase. The latter participated in Niantic's latest USD 200 million funding round in November 2017.
