Poland deactivates estimated 12 million unregistered SIMs

Up to 12 million SIM cards may have been disabled in Poland for failing to register, estimates Rzeczpospolita. The regulator UKE told the daily that according to data submitted by operators, 68.7 percent pre-paid SIM cards had been registered by the deadline of 01 February for registering pre-paid SIM cards under anti-terrorism legislation in Poland.

Grazyna Piotrowska-Oliwa, CEO of Virgin Mobile Poland, said that her company had disabled 59,000 pre-paid cards, or around 14 percent of its whole customer base. Representatives of other operators underlined that they are satisfied with the results of the registration campaign.

Austrian govt to introduce pre-paid card registration from 2019

The 'security package' legislation recently adopted by the Austrian government and raising controversies includes an obligation to register pre-paid Sim cards from 01 January 2019. The obligation will apply to SIM cards already in use and there are approximately 5.5 million pre-paid SIMs in use currently. The massive increase was due to the launch of MVNOs like Hot or Spusu and according to mobile experts' estimates, 3.5 million SIM cards are not registered, as Der Standard reported.

Poland mobile base down 10% in year to June

There were 51.7 million SIM cards in Poland at the end of June, a 9.6-percent decrease year-on-year, according to the latest report by the Polish Statistical Office (GUS). The number of post-paid subscribers increased by 9.1 percent to 33.3 million, while the number of pre-paid users decreased by 30.9 percent to 18.4 million following the introduction of mandatory registration earlier this year.

Sales of prepaid SIM cards in Poland may slow as a result of the anti-terrorism legislation requiring registration of personal data with prepaid SIM cards, reports Rzeczpospolita. The new anti-terrorism act could block about 30 million pre-paid SIMs in Poland, reports Media2.pl. If the government adopts the act in line with the plan, the first blocking could take place as early as the end of 2016. The changes could lead to increased prices for telephones.
