Potential Oi-TIM merger could be approved by Anatel

A possible merger of Brazilian telecom operators Oi and TIM, after the resolution of Oi's judicial recovery, would not have a difficult approval process at the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), the regulator's chairman, Juarez Quadros, told Reuters. The comments came a day after Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, a key stakeholder in Oi, told the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper that Oi could join forces with TIM if its bid for the Brazilian telecoms group is successful.

Quadros added that overlaps would have to be limited (especially in mobile telephony) and there would have to be conditions.

The president of Anatel said that a future auction of frequency bands for the 5G mobile service operation should only occur after 2020, after the ITU approves the standards for the operation of the technology.
