Qualcomm unveils premium Snapdragon 835 processor
Qualcomm has unveiled at CES its latest top-tier processor for smartphones, the Snapdragon 835. Already in production, the processor is expected to ship in devices in the first half of 2017. This is the first product to be manufactured using the 10nm FinFET process node; Qualcomm earlier announced Samsung as its production partner

The Snapdragon 835 is designed to support next-generation entertainment experiences and connected cloud services, extending beyond smartphones to include VR/AR headsets, IP cameras, tablets and mobile PCs. Qualcomm announced Osterhout Design Group as the first customer for the processor, for its R-8 and R-9 augmented reality glasses. R-8 is ODG’s first consumer mobile AR/VR smartglasses, targeted at the consumer early adopter, and R-9 is designed for light enterprise and prosumer media consumption. The R-9 will shipp from Q2, and a developer version of the R-8 will be available in H2.

Qualcomm's new processor comes with the X16 LTE modem with support for gigabit LTE, integrated 2x2 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5, and optional 802.11ad for multi-gigabit Wi-Fi. Improved processing power and performance is supported by the new Qualcomm Kryo 280 CPU and Hexagon 682 DSP, which includes support for TensorFlow for machine learning and Halide for image processing. The Snapdragon 835 also includes the new Adreno 540 GPU and Spectra 180 image sensor processor for next-generation camera capabilities.

Also new in Snapdragon 835 is the Qualcomm Haven security platform with enhanced security for biometrics and device attestation. In addition, Qualcomm promises longer battery life. The Snapdragon 835 is 35 percent smaller in package size and consumes 25 percent less power compared to its previous flagship processor, supporting longer battery life and thinner designs. The Snapdragon 835 also is equipped with Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.
