Razer unveils second smartphone for gaming market

Razer has unveiled its second smartphone optimised for gamers, the Razer Phone 2. It will launch in the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific in Q4 for USD 799.

The Razer Phone 2 offers up to 30 percent more performance than its predecessor, the company claims. It runs the Qualcomm 845 Snapdragon chipset and Adreno 630 graphics processing unit, with the performance further enhanced by the Razer vapor chamber cooling system. The vapor chamber provides more surface area for heat to dissipate, while sustaining high frame rates for a more powerful experience.

The phone comes with a 5.7-inch UltraMotion Igzo display. Razer claims this is the only display in the industry that offers both 120 Hz screen refresh and 120 Hz touch sampling. Furthermore, the new display is 50 percent brighter than the original Razer Phone. Gaming is further supported with dual front-spacing speakers on the top and bottom bezels, a 4,000 mAH battery and gigabit LTE.

To optimise the performance of the phone, Razer worked with recent game titles such as PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds Mobile (PUBG Mobile), Rival Crimson x Chaos, Marvel Future Fight, Guns of Boom and RuneScape. In addition, the phone was certified by Netflix for HDR video content and Dolby Surround 5.1 audio content.

To help users manage their games, the company introduced the Razer Cortex app. This organizes the games on the phone, as well as recommends the latest games optimized for 120 Hz gaming. It will also optimize the Razer Phone 2's performance for different games, either with easy presets or manual settings. The app is also available for other phones, on Google Play.

The camera also gets an upgrade on the new Razer phone. The rear dual-camera setup offers a 12 MP wide-angle lens with optical image stabilization and a 12 MP telephoto lens with 2x zoom. The Sony IMX sensors are tuned to produce low-noise images with a wide gamut of colors. On the front, the 8 MP camera supports video streaming at full HD resolution.

The rear of the phone features the Razer triple-headed snake logo that glows in 16.8 million colors to provide app notifications (such as Facebook comments or WhatsApp messages). Usres can customize the lighting system with effects such as Static, Spectrum Cycling and Breathing.

Wireless charging is also enabled on the Razer Phone 2 with its new glass back, and the Razer wireless charger will also feature its Chroma RGB lighting system. Customers can also charge the phone with a USB-C cable, with support for Qualcomm QuickCharge 4+.
