RIM to launch BBM Money service in Indonesia

Research In Motion is planning to launch its own mobile payments service, called BBM Money. Hastings Singh, the managing director of RIM's South Asia operations, told the BBC in an interview that the service will launch shortly, first in Indonesia, a key market for the BlackBerry maker. The service will initially offer peer-to-peer transfers between Blackberry users. The BBM messenger service is already very popular with Indonesians, and the new mobile money offer is expected to further tie them to the BlackBerry platform. RIM also plans to launch its new BlackBerry 10 phones in Indonesia next year. It faces increasing competition from the Android platform there, which already has 52 percent of the smartphone market in Indonesia, according to IDC.
