Roku launches Roku TV Wireless Speakers
Roku announced the Roku TV Wireless Speakers, the first ever speakers made exclusively for Roku TV. Roku said its speakers are meticulously engineered and calibrated to provide powerful, premium audio to Roku TVs. Because Roku controls the software in both the speakers and TV, it said it's able to provide seamless wireless setup and connectivity, optimise sound for the picture and ensure audio-video synchronisation. Roku TV users can pre-order from Roku.com between 16 – 23 July for a special introductory price of USD 149.99.

Unlike home theater systems, set up is simple with wireless pairing to Roku TVs via Roku Connect. Once paired, users can listen to audio from any streaming channel on the Roku platform, live TV from an antenna, or other devices such as a cable set-top box through the Roku TV Wireless Speakers. The speakers support Bluetooth music streaming from mobile devices. The speakers also offer Automatic Volume Leveling to lower the volume on loud scenes and boost the volume on quieter ones and Dialog Enhancement to improve the intelligibility of speech.

Roku TV Wireless Speakers work exclusively with Roku TVs, which accounted for one out of every four smart TVs sold in the US in Q1. They ship with a Roku TV Voice Remote, which controls both the Roku TV and the speakers, as well as the all-new Roku Touch.

The Roku TV Wireless Speaker bundle has an MSRP of USD 199.99 and begins shipping to customers by late October. The bundle includes 2 Roku TV Wireless Speakers, Roku TV Voice Remote, Roku Touch tabletop remote, 2 power cables and 4 AAA batteries.

Pre-order pricing for the bundle is USD 149.99 through 23 July. From 24 July through 15 October, Roku TV Wireless Speakers will be available for a special price of USD 179.99. Beginning 16 October, pricing is USD 199.99.

JVC joins Roku TV licensing programme

Roku said Shenzhen MTC joined its Roku TV licensing programme to build smart TVs under the JVC brand. MTC will leverage TV hardware reference designs and the Roku operating system (OS) to create a line of JVC smart TVs with the first HD JVC Roku TVs expected to ship in the US later in 2018. By joining Roku's programme, MTC will give customers access to an ever-growing library of entertainment as well as regular, automatic software updates offering the latest and greatest features.

Google closes gap on Amazon in global smart speaker market in Q2

Amazon continues to lead the smart speaker market but its share of shipments fell to 41 percent in Q2 from 44 percent in Q1 and 76 percent in Q2 2017, according to data from Strategy Analytics. By contrast, Google increased its share to nearly 28 percent in Q2, up from 16 percent during the same period last year. Alibaba finished third (7.0%), with Apple (5.9%) and JD.com (2.2%) rounding out the top five.

US consumers forsake set-top boxes for smart devices, saving energy - study

US consumers are increasingly using their own devices, such as phones, dongles and smart TVs, to access video content from pay-TV providers instead of operator-provided set top-boxes, according to a report by industry body The National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA). A third of the 300 million devices used in 2017 to access so-called MVPD services were not set-top boxes, the NCTA said.

Roku improves FY guidance after positive Q2 EBITDA, better-than-expected revenues

Roku increased its full-year guidance again, after reporting better-than-expected revenues and a return to positive EBITDA in Q2. The company grew both hardware and platform revenues in the quarter, with the total figure up 57 percent to USD 156.8 million. Adjusted EBITDA was a positive USD 7.1 million versus a loss of USD 9.6 million a year ago and a loss of USD 0.8 million in Q1.

Roku expands access to free streaming with Roku Channel for web in US, 'Feature Free'

Roku said it launched two new ways to help consumers find free streaming entertainment: a Roku Channel for the web in the US and a navigation change to the Roku home screen called 'Featured Free.' The Roku Channel for the web in the US gives free access to anyone via PCs, mobile phones and tablets. Consumers can visit TheRokuChannel.com to start streaming once they log in or create a RokuOaccount. Twenty-two percent of Germans use an internet connected speaker, according to a representative survey for the digital association Bitkom. Another 17 percent could imagine themselves using such a system. However, for more than half of respondents, connected speaker systems are of no interest, with 57 percent saying they cannot imagine using such a system.

The NASA agency launched a channel for Roku digital media streaming devices. Users can install the app for free to access NASA content. This channel, a version of the NASA app, is similar to previous versions of the app created for iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV devices. Users have downloaded the NASA app more than 18 million times across all platforms.

FuboTV claims first with 4K HDR support for World Cup

The US online TV service FuboTV has started offering 4K HDR10 support in beta, claiming a first among online pay-TV providers. The initial trial includes matches from the World Cup in Russia on Fox and FS1, for customers using a Chromecast or Fire TV device that support the format. FuboTV said it will also launch 4K HDR10 on Roku and Apple TV in the coming weeks.

Acorn TV, a streaming service for British and international TV content, announced that it's now available in Mexico via Roku streaming players or Roku TVs. Roku looking to have Mexican sales ban lifted by July

US content streaming company Roku expects to have the ban on the sale of its set-top boxes in Mexico lifted by July, reports El Universal, citing the company's marketing manager Matthew Anderson. "All the cases brought by Roku and its distributors are currently being studied by a collegiate court with the expectation that they'll be heard in June and July," said Anderson, adding that Mexico is the only country to have imposed a sales ban of this type.
