Rostelecom continues investing in Sputnik search engine

Russian national operator Rostelecom plans to invest RUB 260.4 million in the further development of its search engine and browser Sputnik, reports Vedomosti. Sputnik is due to be adapted to work with Big Data. In May, the possible cessation of the project had been announced.

Rostelecom plans to raise the results quality of the search engine and the browser is expected to include an option for user control for corporate subscribers.

We are used to a a very extensive system of user interfaces and the use of the human voice could drastically change that system. Google tells Russian regulator not demoting news sites

Google does not change its search algorithm to re-rank individual sites, it said in a letter to Russia's federal telecommunications watchdog Roskomnadzor, reported by Reuters. This follows Moscow expressing concerns the search engine might discriminate against Russian media. Roskomnadzor said earlier this month it would seek clarification from Alphabet's Google over whether it intentionally placed articles from Russian news websites Sputnik and Russia Today lower in search results.

A US federal judge has ruled that Canada's supreme court cannot force Google to remove search results in the US, reports the Wall Street Journal. The ruling by a US district judge in San Jose, California, is described as the first time a US court has weighed in on the issue of who gets to police the internet after Canada's supreme court this summer ruled that the country's courts can order Google to remove search results all over the world on the grounds that "the internet has no borders".
