RTL most watched private TV station in Germany

RTL had the most viewers of any German private TV station in 2016, though public stations continued to attract the largest market shares, new figures from the VPRT show.

According to figures released by the German telecommunications association VPRT, RTL was the most popular private station among German viewers on an average day in 2015-2016, attracting 9.7 percent of the market. 

Sat.1 came in second among private stations with 7.3 percent of the market, followed by VOX with 5.2 percent and ProSieben with 5 percent.

Kabel eins and RTL II secured 3.8 percent and 3.5 percent of the market respectively.

However, public stations had the greatest share of viewers, with ZDF securing a market share of 13 percent. ARD Dritte and ARD Das Erste each attracted 12.1 percent of the market respectively.

By contrast, public station ZDF Neo came in with 2.1 percent of the market, 3Sat with 1.2 percent and Arte with 1 percent.

Overall, private programming edged out the public sector, winning 52.1 percent of the market to the public stations’ 42.5 percent.

These figures only take into account traditional broadcast via television set and excluded online offerings, VPRT confirmed.
