SABC, DStv face probe over news channel deal

South Africa regulator Icasa has requested the Competition Commission investigate a "possible restrictive horizontal practice" between pay-TV service MultiChoice and the public broadcaster SABC. The issue concerns their agreement last July for Multichoice's DStv to carry SABC's free-to-air, 24-hour news channel on DStv. Icasa is concerned about reports that the agreement also contained an obligation relating to set-top box control in which the SABC is alleged to have agreed that it will transmit its free-to-air channels without encryption.
