Samsung confirms LCD spin-off from April

Samsung Electronics confirmed plans to spin off its LCD business into a separate company. The subsidiary will then consider a merger with Samsung Mobile Display and S-LCD, creating one company for both LCD and OLED display panels. Samsung is already buying out Sony's share in the S-LCD venture to make it a wholly owned subsidiary. Samsung said the restructuring responds to the growing emergence of OLEDs as the dominant technology in the display industry. As an independent company, the LCD business will also be able to invest and develop more quickly, with its own autonomous management. The spin-off is expected to take effect from 01 April.
