Samsung nearly doubles Q2 operating profit

Samsung Electronics reported another strong improvement in results for the second quarter. Its preliminary report shows operating profit nearly doubled year-on-year, to a record KRW 14.0 trillion from KRW 8.1 trillion. Revenues rose 17.8 percent to KRW 60 trillion.

The solid results follow the launch of the company's new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8 in April. The device is said to have sold over 5 million units in less than a month.

Samsung Q4 operating profit grows more than 63%

Samsung Electronics expects its Q4 operating profit to grow 63.8 percent year-on-year to KRW 15.1 trillion (USD 14.1 billion). That compares to KRW 9.2 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2016, Samsung said in its preliminary report. Sales are expected to reach KRW 66 trillion for the three months ended 31 December 2017, which represents an increase of 23.8 percent year-on-year.

Samsung nearly doubles Q2 net profit

Samsung Electronics nearly doubled its net profit in the second quarter, thanks to strong growth in its components and handset businesses and the takeover of consumer electronics group Harman. Net profit increased to KRW 11.05 trillion from KRW 5.85 trillion a year ago, as sales rose 20 percent to KRW 61.00 trillion. Operating profit was up 72.9 percent to KRW 14.07 trillion, in line with the company's preliminary report.

Samsung S8 sales 50% higher than S7 in LatAm since launch

Samsung said the Galaxy S8 range is its best-selling smartphone in Latin American markets, with 50 percent more units sold than its predecessor, the S7 over a comparable period. The company said sales of the S8 and S8+ in the key Argentina, Brazil and Mexico markets since launch are almost double those of the S7 over the same period.

Samsung has launched its flagship Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones in the new colour of Coral Blue. The phones' specifications and prices are otherwise the same as at the initial launch in late March. A new Rose Pink of the S8+ is also available in selected markets.

Samsung starts mass production of Exynos IoT processor

Samsung Electronic has started mass production of its first Exynos-branded IoT product, the Exynos i T200. The products is built on a 28-nanometer (nm) High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) process and features Wi-Fi connectivity. In terms of processing, the Exynos i T200 uses both a Cortex-R4 processor and an additional Cortex-M0+ processor enabling the devices it supports to process and perform various tasks without the need for an extra microcontroller IC in the system.

Samsung delays US launch of virtual assistant Bixby

The English-language version of Samsung's voice-activated virtual assistant Bixby is not expected to debut until at least late June, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street. Samsung sells 5 mln Galaxy S8 smartphones worldwide

Samsung Electronics reports that global sales of its Galaxy S8 smartphones reached 5 million units in less than a month after the device was officially launched, Yonhap news agency reports. "Although we cannot provide a detailed figure, the sales are going smoothly around the globe", said an unnamed Samsung representative. Samsung reported a drop in mobile revenues and profit in the first quarter but said shipments improved compared to the previous quarter thanks to new mid-range models like the A7. Revenues at the mobile division fell 15 percent year-on-year and 0.5 percent from the fourth quarter to KRW 23.50 trillion, and operating profit was down to KRW 2.07 trillion from KRW 3.89 trillion a year ago.
