Samsung to power Spark's 5G network development in New Zealand
Samsung Electronics has signed a contract with New Zealand operator Spark to take part in building Spark’s 5G network in 2020. Spark previously selected Samsung for its 5G trials in carried out in 2019. These trials used Samsung’s 5G services to test and verify the potential of next generation network technology at Spark Lab. 

Samsung Networks will provide Spark with its 5G New Radio (NR) services, including Massive MIMO radios.

Samsung also reports that, since April 2019, its Massive MIMO service has been commercially deployed for nationwide rollouts led by all three mobile operators in Korea. The services will also be commercialized in Japan this month.

New Zealand operator Spark has announced the Palmerston North's city centre will be the first location in New Zealand to have access to 5G on both mobile and wireless broadband, with an additional four locations to follow before the end of year. Spark's 5G rollout follows the government's recent allocation of 5G C-band spectrum.

New Zealand operator Spark announced it has secured spectrum for 5G roll-out over the next 12 months. The government has decided to use a direct allocation process, rather than an auction, giving Spark and 2degrees access to frequencies in the 3.5 GHz band.

Spark launches 5G commercial wireless broadband in South Island

New Zealand operator Spark has launched its first 5G commercial service in selected areas of five South Island towns and communities. Spark 5G wireless broadband services are now live in selected areas of Westport, Clyde, Twizel, Tekapo, and Hokitika. Spark introduced its 5G service in Alexandra in September this year. Spark also introduced its '5G Discover' plan, which provides up to 600 GB per month of data.

Spark announces 5G roll-out plans into 2020, network vendors

Spark said it will deliver 5G wireless broadband into five more South Island locations prior to Christmas, followed by further communities from March 2020. A broader range of 5G services, covering both mobile as well as wireless broadband, will launch into major centres from mid-2020, subject to spectrum being made available by the government.

New Zealand operator Spark has added the Samsung Galaxy Note10 and Note 10+ to its smartphone portfolio. Both devices are available at Spark for pre-order. Spark also reports that customers can receive a 50 percent discount on the Spark Unlimited Pay Monthly mobile plan for 6 months upon purchasing the Note10 or Note 10+.

Spark Sport goes live on new devices

New Zealand operator Spark has expanded its Spark Sport platform to a range of new devices. The Spark Sport service is now available on 2017+ Panasonic Smart TVs, 2017+ Sony Android TVs, Freeview A2 Recorders and Freeview Smart VU Streaming Devices. Spark Sport was previously available on web, iOS and Android devices, 2017+ Samsung Smart TVs, Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD and Google Chromecast.

SK Telecom launches LTE-A Pro with five-band CA, 4X4 MIMO

South Korean operator SK Telecom has commercialized five-band Carrier Aggregation (CA) and 4X4 MIMO LTE-A Pro technologies. Engineers from SK Telecom are checking the telecommunications network for five-band CA in Seoul, South Korea. SK Telecom's five-band CA LTE-A Pro service supports up to 700Mbps data rates. According to SK, the five-band CA LTE-A Pro service currently covers 53 cities in Korea, including Seoul, Busan and Daegu.

SK Telecom, Nokia to jointly develop 5G network technology

South Korean telecommunications operator SK Telecom has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with network equipment maker Nokia. The partners will jointly develop technologies to support the rollout of a 5G mobile network, The Korea Times reports, citing Park Jin-hyo, SVP and head of network technology R&D center at SK Telecom. SK Telecom says it is willing to work with more network equipment manufacturers for this technology, alongside its existing partners Samsung Electronics and Ericson.
