Samsung has released three new smartphones in its A series for the mid-range market. As with other recent models in the series, the A80, A40 and A20e offer a taste of premium features, such as multiple cameras and large batteries, at a more affordable price than Samsung's top S series smartphones. The A40 is available now for a recommend price of EUR 249, the A20e will launch at the end of April for EUR 179, and the A80 is planned for early May at EUR 649.
Designed for 'digital natives', the A80 is Samsung's first phone with a rotating camera, to help users document their daily life in video and images. The triple camera is housed in an extension of the phone that slides up from the top, and then can be rotated within the extension to face front or back for standard or selfie images. As such, all the lenses offer the same quality in either mode, including a standard lens of 48 megapixels, a depth sensor with 'Live Focus' to scan the viewed area for action, and an ultra wide angle lens.
Similar to the A30 and A50 released last month, the A80 also comes with a large Amoled 'Infinity' screen, of 6.7 inches with full HD+ resolution, and a large battery, of 3,700 mAh, with 25W fast charging. Samsung said it also offers AI features where the phone learns the user's daily routines in order to optimise app and device performance and increase batter efficiency. Standard Samsung services are also included, such as Samsung Pay and Health and the voice-activated assistant Bixby, as well as an in-display fingerprint sensor and 128 GB internal storage.
The Galaxy A80 is available in the colours Angel Gold, Ghost White and Phantom Black. Similar to devices from rivals like Honor, the A80's colour changes based on how the light is reflected, with Angel Gold including elements of pink and the Ghost White option sometimes appearing blue.
The Galaxy A40 comes with a lower price tag and the associated lower specifications. The top feature is an ultra wide angle (123-degree) second camera on the back with AI scene optimizer, alongside a 16-megapixel, f/1.9 lens, and a 25-megapixel camera on the front.
The device runs an octa-core processor and comes with an 5.9-inch Amoled Infinity-U display with Full HD+ resolution, facial recognition and a fingerprint scanner on the back. With 4G RAM, 64 GB storage and up to 512 GB external storage, the A40 is available in the colours Black, Blue, White or Coral. It features a 3,100 mAh battery with fast charging.
