Senegal President Sall sides with Wari over Tigo Senegal sale

A decree signed by Senegal’s President Macky Sall has approved the transfer of the mobile licence held by Tigo Senegal to Wari Group, reports Agence Ecofin. The decree, passed on 01 August, represents a personal victory for Wari’s CEO Kabirou Mbodje, who was received by Sall in February as a sign of the government’s support for the acquisition of Millicom’s Tigo business, announced in February.

At the end of July, Millicom said it had exercised the right to terminate its agreement with Wari, opting instead for a new deal with a consortium consisting of NJJ (Iliad founder Xavier Niel's private holding company), Sofima (telecom investment vehicle managed by the Axian Group) and Teyliom Group. The move was met by a swift response from Wari, threatening legal action over the abandoned USD 129 million sale.

Millicom has since defended its decision, saying that the termination was compliant with the terms of the sales agreement.
