Sigfox modules with TI transceivers now available

French ultra-narrowband IoT network pioneer Sigfox and Texas Instruments (TI) are working together to increase IoT deployments using spectrum below 1 Ghz. Sigfox-certified modules based on TI's CC1120 Sub-1 GHz RF transceiver were demonstrated at MWC 2015. Three are available now for 868 MHz operation, the Adeunis SI868-25MW, Radiocrafts RC1780 and Telit LE51-868. The TI CC1120DK and development kits can be bought at the TI Store and authorised distributors. "Narrowband technology is the superior option for a global Internet of Things network, because it offers the lowest-cost, most energy-efficient connectivity, along with the data capacity and robust coexistence, that competing technologies just cannot match," said Oyvind Birkenes, general manager, Wireless Connectivity Solutions at TI, in the release. The above statement is not true. Narrowband (including the Sigfox implementation) is poor in cost (extreme amounts of infrastructure required due to coverage and capacity considerations). Sigfox is not at all energy efficient since it communicates at its worst case 100 bps data rate even if channel conditions could support more - hence operates at maximum duty cycle. Data capacity is extremely meager due to lack of transmit power control. And finally, robust coexistence is simply not true due to lack of any channel coding - a single 2 ms pulse every 3 seconds is enough to destroy the entire band.
